Master Bedroom Suites Knowledge Base
Have you ever renovated an attic into a master bedroom suite? We are considering purchasing a home (near Chicago) that would need a significant renovation of an unfinished attic to make it into a master bedroom suite (including a full bath). 1. I am looking for information on what it takes to do this job. 2. Any ideas on cost info (I need professionals for the job) 3. What to look out for 4. Feedback – if you did this once, would you do it again? Thanks in advance
I want to add a master bedroom suite, would it be better to build out or up? I have the space to build out but not a lot, I would rather have a private upstairs suite. The house is a ranch style with a walkout basement. The main level has 3 bdrms and 1 and a half baths. The best place on that floor would eat up valuable garden area. I want my suite but I have to have my garden. Is it more expensive to build up rather than out?
Master Bedroom Suite? Where should the Master Bedroom Suite be? First floor, second floor, or basement (lower level)?
What does your dream master bedroom and bath consist of? Don't mention just appliances, but what about windows? The way the walls are shaped? Arched doorways? Tile? Carpet? His and her own closet? A laundry shoot? A seperate bath and tub? A private toilet? A fireplace? If you had the choice to tell an architect what you would like your master suite and master bathroom to look like, what would you desire? I don't have 6000 sq. ft. to work with, so don't go bizzarre on the ideas.

Please read the question my roommates and myself are trying to come up with how much the person taking the master bedroom should have to pay extra for having that bedroom
How much more should my roommate pay for getting the master bedroom? My roommate and I are moving into a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo. Her bedroom is the master bedroom (a little bigger than the other one) and has an en-suite bathroom. The other bedroom is smaller and the bathroom is over by the kitchen. We both agreed that she should pay more each month, but how much more do you think is fair? Our total rent is $1500/mo.
Do you think zen style interior is recommended for a master bedroom? I'm designing a master bedroom, the problem is, it is lack of basic furniture pieces and It must have an inexpensive yet stylish furnishings, I used zen style to bring forth an ambiance of nature and to have an airy and a well thought design for the couple,I used greens and neutral colors that would make a scenic view of nature... low level furnishings was done. do you think zen style suites well?
Would it be worth it to convert existing bedroom space to master suite? My husband and I are looking into buying a 100 year old farmhouse. The house is a 3 bed/1 bath. Like all houses built in the early 1900s this one obviously did not originally have indoor plumbing, so when it was added the owners at that time took the obviously easier route and added it to the main floor at the bottom of the stairs. At some point someone also converted two of the bedrooms upstairs into one large master (it went from a 4 to 3 bed at that time). If we buy the house we plan to turn part of the mudroom on the other side of the house into a full bath, but the question remains if it makes sense to also add a bathroom to the oversize master bedroom. If we do so it will be the only bathroom on the floor, but will obviously be inaccessible to the other two bedrooms. There is no other reasonable configuration for adding a bedroom on the second floor. There is no other reasonable configuration because the stairs are in the way of where the bathroom door would have to go if it is not a part of a master suite and otherwise there is no existing plumbing on the other side of the house. The only other options that we could come up with would be to move the stairs, add space to the existing floorplan or convert an entire 1/2 of the master into a bathroom (effectively making it not a master at all, but rather a third bedroom). So I suppose it's not unreasonable so much as it is just out of our budget. We will likely do most of the work ourselves with the help of our dads (contractor from out of state and carpenter) a plumber and an electrician.
Which room would be better for a master bedroom? Room 1: 53 square foot One window with far reaching views of the hills. On the front of the house (where there is a quiet, but not unused, road) Has an en-suite. Has a children's bedroom adjacent to it and the walls are thin enough to hear through... Room 2: 64 square foot Two windows but still single aspect. On the back of the house overlooking the large garden and views of the fields. No en-suite. At the end of the house so it is totally private - the kids will be at the other end of the house.
What color pallets should I consider for a Versailles themed bedroom? I have the opportunity to redecorate my master bedroom. New furniture. New linens. New wall color. I would really like to paint my walls a nice red color, but I am unsure where to go from there. This is the bedroom suite I am considering: http://www.thefurniture.com/store/ASHL-SD-SLVRGLD-PANEL-BD-B174.htm I would appreciate any help.
How much would it be to add a 500-600 sq ft master suite to my house? The house is colonial style with nothing above the garage and family room. I would be interested in adding a master bedroom with a nice attached bathroom and walk in closet. Perhaps even a small sitting area. Essentialy we would only need to rip the roof off the existing garage and family room and build. The stairs are conveniently set up so that we could clear a small portion of the exterior wall to gain entrance to this new area. If it matters, we live in a middle class Philadelphia suburb.
If a master suite was created out of existing space in a home, what is the approximate added value? The space is "useless" as it was used as a small boutique business. It has several small storage rooms and a "cash register" area and a commercial bathroom, and nothing that could be used by a family. If transformed into a master suite, adding a bedroom and full bath to the home, plus all the top amenities expected from a master suite, how much value would this add? The home is in the "upscale" price range for the area. This is a residential area that does have limited businesses within a few blocks. The former owner was granted a variance and it does not pass on. There were very strict rules for the variance and for reasons too long to explain, the city will never allow any business there again.
master bedroom on front of house? We are thinking about remodeling, and have had a designer come up with plans. All of her suggestions include moving the master bedroom to the downstairs front of the house. She does not think this is uncommon. What do you think? By the way, we have thought about the plans, and from a cost standpoint, this is probably the only way to get the master suite that we are looking for, without being too expensive. Our other option is to move, but we would love to stay if possible. so to give details on my current house layout. it's a 1.5 story cape cod. 3 bedrooms upstairs (including master). On first floor there's a den and living room on the front of the house, with guest bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and dining room across the back of the house. The new plan calls for turning den and bedroom downstairs into master suite, making the kitchen bigger and more usable, and adding a living room onto the back of the house. Thanks for everyone's opinion.
Is this a big enough master bedroom? I am designing an addition to our small house (currently under 700 sq ft), part of the addition is a master suite. To keep with the character of the house, it was build in 1877, the addition is going to relatively modest. My question is, do you think a bedroom that is 9'8" wide by 13' long is too small? The room will be vary airy in design, and will have a master bathroom and a semi-walk closest (5'x7'), which are in addition to the measurement above; overall room including these and the stair case entry is 16'x16'. Thanks .j.
Everything else is GREAT but the seller converted the living room into the master bedroom. What do you think? I guess the home originally had a living room and a family room, along with a dining room. The seller knocked down the walls that seperated one of the bedrooms from the living room and combined the space into one big ol master suite. The bay window that overlooks the street is in the bedroom now. Is this bizarre? I suppose we could convert it back when we sold the property but has anyone else seen this before. The home looks great though but this is the only strange thing. They put walls up already. I was just wondering how odd it would be to have the master bedroom at the front of the home when it's always the living room that is in that space. I guess it's not that big a deal...
losing a bedroom but gaining a master suite? There are three bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. I'm currently using the one downstairs as an office space, i have no master suite what so ever. would it be worth it to take out a bedroom upstairs and add a master suite? I don't want to lose any money, but i'm definately not trying to gain additional profit from my house when i do decide to move. i'm just worried about there being only two bedrooms upstairs and the other one downstairs. i'm really wanting to go ahead and add a master bath and closet, it's just me but my brother will be moving in within the next year since he's going to be attending college here) and i definitely can't see sharing a bathroom with him... so basically.. would i lose a ton of money in the house by doing that?
master bedroom powder room adds value to the house? We just bought a house with a powder room as part of the master bedroom. Since this is just a sink and toilet not a full en-suite, does it really add much value to the house? To me it just seems like a reminder that the house doesn't have a full master en-suite and I am contemplating taking the fixtures out and just turning the space into a second closet as the bedroom doesn't have much closet space otherwise. In my mind a full wall of closets in a master bedroom has more value than a sink and toilet that are right next door to the main bathroom for the floor. Any real estate agents have an opinion to share?
What are some moving companies that will handle smaller moves? I am moving in with my parents in Miami when my husband deploys. I have a master bedroom suite and a full living room plus about 5 boxes for misc stuff that I need to get down there! Unfortunately I can't drive a moving truck myself so I'm entertaining other options. I have looked into U-Box through U-Hual and have found it to be very expensive. I am looking for other companies or options...... Thanks in advance!!! Sorry! Moving from Fort Knox Ky
What costs more: adding on master bedrm suite or renovating interior walls, moving kitchen, adding bath? We have a 2 story. The downstairs currently has kitchen/dinette/family room, small guest room, small dining room, exercise room and living room. We want to have a master bedroom downstairs. Either we add on a new section to the house with master bedroom, walk-in closet and master bath (figure 20x40 ft. addition?) (we have space outside), OR, we move rooms around inside to make better use of existing house, by moving some non-support walls, moving kitchen from existing area to another area of the downstairs and carve out new closets and a new master bath. If we move the rooms around, we end up with a master bedroom suite, the small dining room, great room and kitchen. We think we can use most of the existing kitchen cabinets in the new space. I should be able to order additional matching cabinets, as they are not very old. Which if the jobs would be more expensive?
Which is better for resale - Formal living room OR a 4th bedroom/laundry room? We already have a family/great room and the formal living room is just sitting there for show. I'd like to convert the space into a larger master suite (making the current master the 4th bedroom) and a laundry room. We will sell eventually, what would most buyers prefer/what will raise the value the most? Thanks!
How much to add a 2nd Floor? My husband and I own a small home in San Diego. The main house is approx 1200 sf with a 500 sf addition in the rear. If we wanted to add a second floor to our home (maybe over half the house for a larger master bedroom suite), what would a ballpark figure be for an addition like that? I know figures provided would be estimates, but I wouldn't even begin to guess on prices and I don't want to contact contractors when I'm not even sure if this is something we can do. Any help would be appreciate. Thanks!
adding a bedroom & bathroom in Oklahoma? Would like to add a master suite (bedroom and bathroom) to current 3125 sq foot home with three bedrooms & only one bath in southeast Oklahoma on several acres. Average home in small town is only $45,000. would like 450-500 sqft. Any guesstimates on prices. House is a vacation home about 5 hrs from home in Tx, want more space to invite guest out to property and need at least two bathrooms. Plus, there are eight family members who will use the home through out the year.
Disneyland Hotel One-Bedroom Suite? Does anyone know if in the Disneyland One Bedroom suite, if there is the master bedroom and another bedroom, or is there only one bedroom (that being the master bedroom)? Does anyone also know if there is a roll-out bed in the living room (in the couch)?
Do home buyers prefer the master suite to be separate from other bedrooms? I'm considering a remodeling design that would add a large walk in closet to our master bedroom. There is currently a bedroom door right next to the master door which would need to be moved in order for this to work, which would cause the master bedroom to feel isolated to it's own side of the house. My first thought was that this was a good thing as far as resale value is concerned, but then I realized that perhaps parents with small children might actually want their (kids) door to be easily accessible from their bedroom. What are your thoughts? Thanks
How to figure out the architecture style of my house? I live in a four bedroom, two bathroom two story house. There's a dining room, living room, kitchen, master suite, and bedroom downstairs, and two bedrooms, bathroom, and a family room upstairs. There is a walk-in attic off of one of the bedrooms. The upstairs is like..a loft I guess. When you walk in the front door you can see the family room upstairs. And when you're upstairs and you lean over the ledge to look downstairs. I've heard the words 'extended cape' once before, but I can't find any information regarding that style. I'm really curious. I know the house isn't 'custom', because several houses in my area, Long Island, New York, have the same layout.
Can you add on to a mobile home? My friend just bought a mobile home. A 32x80, 2007. It was a 5 bedroom but she turned it into a 3 bedroom, with 2 master suites; because of her mother lives with her and her husband. Now she found out she is pregnant with twins. Can you add onto a doublewide trailer? They just bought this home 8 months ago and cannot afford to buy another home.
What are the most important things Generation Y wants in their own home or apartment? I am looking to build homes and or apartments for Generation Y. Everyone tells me Generation Y wants cooler and different. Maybe the loft look? High technology built in? Home theaters? Big bedrooms or master suites with kick ass bathrooms? Open space? Energy efficancy, "Green Building"? If the home or apartment is built "Green" is it worth it to you to pay more for that? What is most important to Generation Y, cool and different, or cheep?
The woman I love insists on his and hers facing toilet bowls so we can spend more time together. What to do? The woman I love insists on his and hers facing toilet bowls so we can spend more time together. What to do? The darling woman I love and I are building a new home, the home of our dreams. I have always wanted a master bedroom suite, complete with a luxurious bathroom. In the plans, there are his and hers sinks, a jacuzzi garden tub, and a huge shower, with many shower heads to spray you all over at once. The commode (toilet bowl) will be separated, which is a plus. But, she wants two commodes, in there together, facing each other, so we can talk and spend even more time together. Ok, I love the woman, but I think expelling bodily functions together may be a little over the top for me. What do you think?
Decorating bedroom, updating outlet covers? Need some opinions on updating our large master bedroom. It has dark wood crown molding and floorboard trim, new neutral carpet and wood french doors and windows. We have painted the largest wall a country blue and are painting the remaining walls a light tan (I think?!). The bedroom suite is dark wood with nickel finishes. We are going for a modernized country feel if that makes sense. What color should the outlet covers be, wood to match the trim or nickel to match the fan and furniture set?
Would you want a jacuzzi IN your bedroom? Like...a corner tub right IN the bedroom. I know that it's something that people desire in say....a hotel suite, but is this something that people would want in their master bedroom as well? Thanks!
what are some alternative heating sources for an Attic suite? our master suite is 500 sq ft total there is a master bedroom and a master bath and a master closet..so we cant extend the pipes from the heater in the basement and we want to heat the whole room ...a heater in the master bedroom and a heater in the bath...what should we put or buy at a home depot that would solve this problem??
What house do you think I should move into? I am moving soon because my husband got a new job. We were looking at a few houses and are trying to decide out of the 2. The first one is a two story 1 master suite, and 2 regular rooms, 3 1/2 baths. The other one has 1 master bedroom, and then 2 other bedrooms, but it is 1 story not counting the basement. They are both nice I just can't decide. Sorry for no pics~
What are some good teen girl bedroom ideas? So my parents gave me a few good ones: Victoria's Secret bag inspired: pink and red stripes on the walls with gold crow molding and a pink carpet Ballet: purple walls, white crown molding, and a hard wood floors Beach/surf themed: Tan carpet, sky blue walls, sea shells and peace signs every where I'm getting my parents old room so it's pretty big and my parents are making a master suite. So want ideas do you like better and what are some other good ones?
Top Floor Master Suite? Will it add value? I am purchasing a 4+ bedroom townhome with finished attic. I am considering installing a master bath on the top level so in essence turning it into the master suite. Will this add value to the home or is it in general better to locate the master suite on the traditional second floor level?
what colors compliment historic red for a bedroom? The walls are have been textured in a Venetian plaster and painted a deep historic red. The bed is a canopy 4 post mahogany brown bed. This is the master suite and we are looking for a rich elegant royal but contemporary feel. We have two lamps that have gold lamp shades with crystal bases.
Can a master suite have a 1/2 bath and still be considered a master suite or does it have to be full bath? Me and my boyfriend live in an old Victorian house that needs a lot of renovating and we were thinking of converting one of the bedrooms into a walk-in closet and bathroom. But I was wondering if we could just put a half bath instead of a full bath and it still be considered a proper master suite. Also, would it be very weird to have to walk through the walk-in closet to get into the bathroom or is that not uncommon? Thanks :)
How much would this house be worth in an ok area? 4 bedrooms 1 full bat. that needs to be redone unfinished basement no laundry room no renovations old appliances in the kitchen bad flooring, needs to be painted not a big master bedroom, no on suite bathroom small closets and the roof has to be redone soon and also the septic tank needs to be cleaned. any general prices ?
Do you think this is a good idea in a marriage?...i read this article...? A Bizarre Feature Popular in New Houses If you're thinking about building a new house, beware the builder may ask you if you want two master bedroom suites--one for the Mr. and one for the Missus. Turns out, this is the latest rage in new homes, with the National Association of Home Builders predicting that 60 percent of custom-built homes will have two master bedroom suites by 2015. Why? It ensures a more harmonious marriage,It wasn't too long ago that separate bedrooms meant the marriage was failing; now it's viewed as a practical necessity that helps individuals get seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep especially as both husbands and wives juggle child care and work responsibilities. Stephanie Coontz, an expert on families, told The New York Times that many couples are "confident enough that they have a nice marriage, but they don't particularly like sleeping in the same room." She adds, "I don't think it says anything about their sex lives." So if you're intrigued by the idea, but wonder what your friends and family will say, do what many builders are doing. Call that second bedroom a "flex suite." I personally would not like that, isn't the point of marriage to be a couple, as one...ya know, i just think this is crazy...
Why do builders put en-suites on even the smallest houses nowadays? Sometimes, the insistence to add an ensuite has made the 'master' bedroom ridiculously small, with only room for tiny bedside cabinets. It used to be an ensuite was a luxury for larger houses. Now they squeeze one into even their smallest properties, often at the expense of much needed storage or square footage. Why? ...so why does the house price go up? Because I know for a fact I'd rather have more space than two nearly-identical bathrooms next to each other.
Should we convert our garage to a master suite? Here is our situation. My husband and I moved into our first house 4 years ago. We are in our 20's and want to have kids soon. Our house is 860 square feet. We have 2 smaller bedrooms, 1 small bathroom, nice size livingroom, kitchen, and a laundry room. We have an attached garage as well. Our back yard is okay sized, but we wouldn't be able to add on to the back. We also have a storage shed back there. We have a driveway, where my car is parked and my husband parks on the street. We don't use our garage for our vehicles, so we were thinking about converting it for more space. This is what we thought we could do: -put an island in the kitchen -the laundry room will be turned into a dining room -the garage will have a small area for the washer and dryer, a bathroom, a master bedroom and smaller walk-in closet. -we would get a carport to go in the driveway -we purchased our house for $32,000 four years ago, so I don't know how much this will help or hurt us. We would be added square footage to our house and go from a 2 bedroom 1 bath to a 3 bedroom 2 bath home. Do you think this is a good idea? Or should we sell our house and try to find something bigger?
Choosing paint for restful master suite? We are currently in the process of buying a new (our first) home. As we are in a rental now & have always been in apartments prior to this rental house, I really want to make this new home our own. In the master bedroom, I plan on using grasscloth as an accent wall on the wall behind the bed but I am stumped on paint color for the remaining walls.(I hate white walls...Ive been surrounded by them for way too long now) Our style is a comfortable modern & we want every room to reflect a calming peaceful spa-like atmosphere. I know that chocolate(furniture) tan, greens, & whites will be the accents but I am stuck on whether to use a pale green or a light bluish gray tint on the walls. the grasscloth http://www.seabrookwallpaper.com/products/default.aspx?t=2&styleID=13&subjectID=182&patternID=6647&search= I would choose a blue similar to this http://ratemyspace.hgtv.com/SNC/ViewItem.aspx?pguid=6db6be3f-1720-4ba3-a081-999042c09b6b&itemguid=c0647da6-eb29-44b0-8246-36af9c58961e sorry i ran out of room. the green would be similar to this http://ratemyspace.hgtv.com/SNC/ViewItem.aspx?pguid=6db6be3f-1720-4ba3-a081-999042c09b6b&itemguid=b634d90f-379d-46d7-80c4-426a29a7d8f0 And the bedding would be this, minus the duvet in which case will be all white with the sheets slightly exposed like in the photo & a green coverlet at the bottom http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=274916&CategoryID=17626&LinkType=EverGreen
House plan bed and bath size? Is a master suite bedroom with a size of 18 feet by 16 feet noticeably large? Is a master bath of 10 feet by 11 feet big enough to fit a corner jacuzzi, shower, and double sink?

What is more value for re-sale? 4th bedroom or 2nd full bath? Bought a small cape for my first home because it was a great price in the best neighborhood in my city. 1450sf, 4 bedrooms (2 up, 2 down),1 bath (1st floor). Ideally we would like to convert the smaller bedroom upstairs into a 2nd bathroom and make the entire top floor a large master suite. This would change the house from 4BR 1Bath to 3BR 2Bath. How will this effect my re-sale value?
Is $489000 too much for a loft? •Floorplans ranging from 1,187 to 1,457 square feet •Walking distance to Larchmont Village, Paramount Studios •Master bedroom suites with walk-in closets •Absolute black granite kitchen countertops and stainless steel appliances •Beautiful baths with tumbled limestone and custom cabinetry •Soaring ceilings with skylights •Private balconies with ornate wrought-iron detail •Cozy fireplaces •Rustic Maple harwood floors •In-unit laundry facilities • Designer fixtures •Stunning courtyard with Spanish tile fountains •24-hour video surveillance Its 2 or 3 bedrooms right now im not all that sure
How much would it cost to build this house UK? A 2-storey detached house with: -5 Bedrooms including 1 master bedroom with en suite -Approximately 2000-3000 square feet in total - Double Garage detached - Conservatory - Out house /Annexe to the rear Using normal building materials, nothing super extravagant What do you think??
What is the best way to add room to my house? I bought a house to fix up and sell, but it is very small. I was wondering what the best approach is to add room and add value to it. It has 2 medium size bedrooms, a fairly large attic that seems to have been made into a bedroom since there are bookshelves installed in the walls. There is also an unfinished basement. There is also an odd "bedroom" next to the other two. I believe it was a nursey as it had disney wallpaper. It is way too small to be a normal bedroom and possibly too small for a decent sized desk to make it into an office. What is my best option here? Take out the walls of the tiny bedroom and add space to the bathroom? Take out the wall to the small bedroom and make a master suite with a private bath? Make it a huge walk-in closet for the master suite? What would give me more cash? And does adding a bedroom in the attic really count as a 3rd bedroom? Would an open floor-plan downstairs create the illusion of more space?
Master Suite in the basement? I have a 2500 square ft brick ranch with an awesome concrete floor/block wall/fully waterproofed basement. We could literally double our living space by finishing off the basement down there!!! BUT we are trying to not make too many "custom for us" decisions that make no common sense to someone coming to buy in case we decide to sell...My delima: I want a master suite down there. A huge room with a huge luxury bath with spa tub--the WORKS...but is it "acceptable" to have a master in the "basement"? If it's an "odd" idea I intend to just build 3 more bedrooms down there with a simple bath and an office---but I'd sure be willing to give up my current master to the kids if a lower master isn't an oddity! Anybody? Thanks so far everybody! There is NOT enough natural light there so we already know we will have to dig down and create windows in spaces--this is one reason I am thinking "kid rooms" only. Although I would be fine not having big open windows I'm not "normal!" LOL! As far as the waterproofing, my husband owned and operated a waterproofing business and has more than 20 years experience. He waterproofed our basement himself and I have no fears that if problems began water is one problem he could fix. And it's a partial walkout basement with sliding doors on one side that wallk out onto the old driveway and on the other side? Concrete blocks and dirt---no windows currently at all on that side
I designed my own house? So I'm 13 almost 14 and I already have completely designed my own house. I also wan to be an architect when I grow up. How does this sound: 3 bedrooms 4 possible (Not including Master Bedroom) 2 bathrooms 1 Master Bedroom Suite 1 master bathroom + 2 walk-in closets 2 Car Garage Den Kitchen Laundry Room Dining Room Its brick and 2 story. It has 4 bay windows on the front and they are above each other
Advise on which home to buy..? Hi, One has a master bedroom suite on main level and a very modern family room. Kitchen somewhat good. Other has a den in main level.and the home is well maintained. which to choose?
should the carpet be the same color as the bathroom colors? upstairs is just the master bedroom suite. the stairs lead right up into the bedroom and the master bath is off of the bedroom area. My bf wants to put in carpet that matches the master bath... I picked out a color that I believe is pretty close to the "tealish blue greenish" color that accents our master bath. But I am having second thoughts about doing this... is this going to be too much? because then our bedroom is going to have this color carpet. I love the color carpet I really do... But then this would be the base of our bedroom color... which I dont mind but is this a little much?? it would be for the all of the stairs going up to the master bedroom suite and for the bedroom area.
How much are utilities (approx.) per month for a townhome? It is in Illinois; 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom (it's two "master suites" and a 1/2 bath), there is a "bonus" room on the bottom level, but that room is small and just leads off the garage. We would need internet as well. Any help would be appreciated; thank you!
will i lose money if i add a master suite?
Whats valued more? Attached studio apt, or master suite? Hello, I live in Fort Collins, CO, and my house has 3 SMALL bedrooms, 1-3/4 bathrooms, and a 2 car garage converted into a studio apartment. I am looking for what people value more, I am considering making that studio into a very nice sized master suite with large closet and nice bathroom, but would hate to decrease the value of my home by taking away potential rental income. So I am looking at resale, would the majority of people like a 3 bedroom home and studio that brings in $400 of the mortgage payment, or would the average person just like a nice 4 bedroom house with very nice master suite instead? More Details on home: .6 acres, nice lot, 3 car detached garage, homes sits adjacent to a high school. Thanks
Splitting Mortgage Payment/renting out room, What is Fair? My sister and I bought a house 2 years ago. There are 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. My sister pays half the mortgage, and I pay half (with my husband). She has the master bedroom and private bathroom.. and her son has his own room. My new husband and I share one room, and use the other bathroom (not private). The final room is the room in question. We were planning on renting out the extra room to help with our finances.. My sister says that the extra room's rent should be applied toward the mortgage before we split it. I feel that I should get the extra room for my own uses since she and her son have 2 rooms and she doesn't pay anything extra for them (plus she even gets the master bedroom suite). Therefore the rent would belong to me. What do you think is fair? If we sell the house, profits (if any) would be split 50/50 between myself and my sister... My husband is not involved in the ownership of the house. So we split the payment 50/50. Although my husband and I have 2 incomes, we still only have 1 room in the house, and I only have half ownership. If we split the rent money between both of our payments, then my sister would be paying 50% of the house but getting 2 rooms plus half the rented room (62.5% of the rooms in the house). And I would be paying 50% for only 1 room plus half of the rented room. (37.5% of the house)
How's my story so far? If you haven't read the first part of the chapter yet, then check out my previous question! Suddenly, Jess appeared in one of the upstairs windows. “Hey, Belle!” He called, excitement plain on his face. “The bedrooms are like master suites!” Jess had to leave his girlfriend behind, when we left. It was hard on him, but finally he was smiling. He always blames me, even though my parents moved because they needed it. It was either dad transferred to L.A or he's fired, and we couldn't afford that right now. Thankfully, the car came with the job. Now, I thought, I'll be able to go to college. I ran upstairs to check out these “master suites”. There were three bedrooms, each one included a walk-in closet and a large bathroom with a toilet, bath and shower. The Master bedroom was a little bigger than the other two, one on each side of it. It had a wall window in the shape of a circle, with a smaller circle in the middle and lines coming from the little circle to the big one. Outside the door was a long hallway, with two curving staircases on either side. It was more like a balcony into the lower floor. On either side of the Master bedroom were two other bedrooms. One was painted deep blue and one in dark magenta and gold. Jess was already in the blue one, unpacking his bag. “So I guess I'm stuck with this one, huh?” I asked. Jess just smiled. “Yeah, well, oldest gets first pick,” He answered. “Whatever. I wanted the other one anyway.” For some reason, the colors had meaning. I had no clue why but they seemed...me. Plus it had a great view. When I went back downstairs, mom and dad were walking into the main doors, which were huge, by the way, and placing carefully marked boxes that said things like China. Be CAREFUL!, or Jess' CDs. Mom has always been an organization freak. I think that's why she was so happy to move in the first place. Because our old house had gotten so full of junk, and so cluttered that she just wanted to be rid of it, and start over. As for me, this would mean a whole new beginning. Not only with the house, but also with the people. Everything had been fine until my birthday last year. Then I'd started acting weird, getting a little shifty. People had been a little creeped out, and i'd lost all of my friends. I suppose Jess could've helped out a little in that area, but for some odd reason, he doesn't like me. “So,” Dad started. “How's the house? You like it?” I smiled. “Yeah, it's great, dad.” “Well, that's good!” Mom started, “We were worried you kids wouldn't like all the big.” “No, it's fine, mom.” I replied. “Well, you want to help your mother carry these boxes, Belle?” dad asked. “Sure.” I replied, following mom towards here pile of boxes. “Jess!” dad called. “Come help me with the furniture!” Dad always asked Jess for things like that. He'd never ask a woman to do the heavy lifting. Especially not me. I was a delicate creature destined to sew and cook and clean. It made me furious. We have enough sexism in the world, we don't need another. I grabbed two of the boxes with ease. Ever since my birthday, i'd been better at a lot of things. Heavy lifting, for instance, was one of them. I could lift a box of books easily. This, I never told mom or dad. I just never though I should and I've been trusting my instincts lately. Once we got all the boxes into the kitchen, mom started talking. “So,” She started playing with her shirt a little. I knew what this was about. “How have you nights been?” She asked. Another fun surprise had been the dreams, or nightmares rather. They were always about the same thing; I just couldn't understand it. “Fine.” I said, simply, hoping she wouldn't continue. “You haven't been having them anymore?” She asked, a hopeful look on her face. “Not for the past week. The last time was Friday night.” “Well, hopefully it's over.” “Yeah.” I said, thinking to myself. I don't think it would end anytime soon. “It's your first day of school tomorrow, are you excited?” She asked, disposing of the dangerous topic. “Sure, I guess.” I said, quietly. Mom looked at me. “What's this, 'Sure, I guess'?” She asked, causing me to frown. “I don't know, maybe I'm just not sure that I'll even make any friends.” I replied. “Oh, of course you'll make friends!” She said. “You're an amazing girl!” I smiled. Mom had a way of seeing things that I never would. She always saw things positively, like when grams died, she simply said, 'well, at least she's happy in heaven'. Didn't even give a though to how much we were suffering about our loss. But I knew, that when she was alone, she cried for her. Or when my first boyfriend broke up with me, she said, 'who needs him, at least he won't eat all my food anymore'. That had made me laugh, and I completely forgot about Justin. He wasn't that important to me anyway. Thinking back, I realized he wa Thinking back, I realized he was just like a little experiment. My experiment, training was how I thought of it, to prepare myself for the harsh world of dating. He'd been my only boyfriend, and I knew that would come back to haunt me in this new school. Hopefully, Jess would keep his mouth shut. As we finished unpacking the rest of the silverware into the beautiful, black cupboards, we heard a loud curse from the main entryway. I went to investigate and found dad and Jess hauling up the grand piano. “What are you guys doing?” I cried, running up to them. “Why don't you put it downstairs?” “Because,” dad started. “Your...m—mother...wants—it...up in...the master...huff...bedroom.” He finished. “Uh-huh,” I said. “Mom!” “What is it sweetie?” She asked from the kitchen. “They can't haul that thing up the staircase!”I almost yelled. “You're gonna kill Jess!” He was on the bottom. “He'll be fine! You help them, honey!” She replied. I ran to grab the bottom with Jess and lifted. We almost lifted it above Jess' head, which was weird. “Hey, dad.” I started, peering curiously at him. “I seriously think that you can handle this alone. You're practically lifting the whole thing.” Jess looked at me suspiciously. I shrugged. “Uh,” dad started. “I'm not holding it. It's on the ground of the top floor already. You're the only one holding it, Bella.” He said, looking at me with a concerned look on his face. My eyes widened. Shite. “Maybe it's just the angle I'm at?” I offered, suddenly, very nervous of what was happening to me. “I don't think so.” Jess said, his voice shaky. “What's all the ruckus about?” I heard my mom ask, coming out of the kitchen. “Oh, my!” She gasped. “Okay,” I started. “So, while I'm holding this can we get it upstairs please? It's really heavy!” It wasn't really heavy. It felt only about ten pounds, but I wouldn't tell them that, they might send me to an insane asylum. Dad lifted the top end, grunting and making weird noises as we carried it up the rest of the stairs. Finally, we got it into the bedroom, only to result in an awkward silence as my family stared at me like I grew a second head. Mom was about to say something, when she was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. The American anthem filled the room. Dad had heard it and fell in love. He'd immediately ordered the doorbell and made his employers get it installed. We all looked towards the door as the person rang it again. “Oh!”Mom said, shooing us out of the room. “Come on, come one! Let's go greet the guests! We'll talk about this at supper.” She ran down the stairs, opening the door to an overly cheery woman with light brown hair and a big smile on her face. The woman greeted us, practically yelling “Hello! Welcome to the neighborhood!” She reminded me of the 'littles' off of Stuart Little. Cute movie. Jess and I looked at each other, trying not to break out laughing. Her husband, I assumed, walked up behind her. He was the picture of a the abused housewife, as he almost hid behind his wife. A little boy walked between the two and stood in front of his mother. “My name is Jane Jackson, and this is my son Colton, and his father, Jack.” I looked at Jess again. I mouthed Jack Jackson to him. He smiled. Colton Jackson came into the house uninvited and so did his parents. “Come in.” Mom muttered. Colton slowly came up to us, and said, “Hello. My name is Colton. I'm a boy. I like Tarzan. I always wished my dad's name was Tarzan and then it would be Tarzan and Jane. I even asked my mama to name me Tantar but she said that I already had a name.” I couldn't hold it in, and neither could jess. We burst out laughing. “I'm sorry about them,” I heard my mom say. I bent down, smiling at Colton. “It's okay to like a name like Tantar, but you should stick with your own name.” He nodded, frowning. “Well, I'd say we've taken up enough of your time.” Jane said. “Perhaps we can get together another time.” She smiled at us. Jack hadn't said a word the whole time. “Bye!” Colton called, walking out the door. “Thanks for coming.” Dad replied, closing the door behind them. Not wanting to talk to my family, or get lectured from dad, I walked up the stairs and closed my door tightly. Looks like I wouldn't be getting dinner tonight.
What is Raining down on the Obama parade? Ben Smith had this cute little piece out on 16 July of this year on the Raines - Obama connection. An ill-timed -- for Obama -- profile of former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines, forced out in an accounting mess a few years ago. The Style Section piece reports that he's recently been taking "calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters." Taking calls? Doesn't that mean Obama has been calling him? The McCain Campaign had a nice video out on the connection between Obama and Raines. And there is another video out of Fannie Mae head Daniel Mudd praising Obama. So who is Daniel Mudd? I think it will come as no surprise that he lives in a Mudd hut. A 22-room Mudd hut. Evidently ripping off the taxpayers pays very well. Very well indeed. As more than a million US homeowners face devastating mortgage foreclosures, ousted Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd continues to live in an opulent Washington, DC, mansion replete with expansive gardens, servants' quarters and a home theater. Mudd, whose former company is being bailed out by billions in taxpayer dollars, calls home a 22-room Colonial mansion on Newark Street in tony Cleveland Park, built on the former property of President Grover Cleveland. The eight-bedroom, eight-bath pad includes large public rooms with fireplaces, a home theater, a gym, a wine cellar, a solarium, servants' quarters, a terrace off the master-bedroom suite, and a gourmet kitchen. The gated, landscaped property also features a pool, fountains, gardens and a guesthouse. The property is so lavish that some company employees dubbed it "Mudd Manor." And they're furious that the executive at the helm of the ship as it sank into profound crisis has surfaced relatively unscathed, at least for now. "Hey, he lost his limo and corner suite [at the office], but Mudd Manor is not a bad place to contemplate your next move," said a bitter Fannie Mae employee who requested anonymity. "Most Fannie Mae employees are reeling from their employee stock-option-plan account balances' going to cents on the dollar." So the little people get fleeced and the big guys walk. That Obama has some really swell friends.

a little joke for my R&S friends? An 85-year-old couple, after being happily married for almost 60 years, died together in a car crash. They had been in good health the last ten years, mainly due to Mom's interest in health food and proper diet. When they reached the Pearly Gates, St. Peter took them to their luxury mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen, master bedroom suite and a fancy in-house jacuzzi. The old man asked St. Peter how much all this was going to cost. "It's free," St. Peter replied, "this is Heaven." Next, they went out the back yard to survey the championship-style golf course that the home faced upon. They would have golfing privileges every day. In addition, it changed to a new one daily, representing the greatest golf courses on Earth. The old man asked, "So, what are the green fees?" St. Peter replied, "This is Heaven, you play for free!" Next, they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the best cuisine of the World laid out. "How much to eat?" asked the old man. "Don't you understand yet? This is Heaven, it is free!!" St. Peter replied with some exasperation. "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol tables?" the old man asked timidly. In a forceful voice, St. Peter said, "That's the best part, you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick -- this is Heaven!" With that, the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his halo, screaming wildly and taking the Lord's name in vain. St. Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking what was wrong. The old man glared at his wife and said, "This is all your fault! If it weren't for your blasted bran muffins, I could have been here years ago!"
Do vanities in separate bathrooms have to be the same? I have a two bedroom, two bath condo. It is the perfect roommate floor plan in that on each side of the living room is a master bedroom suite. The bathrooms are very, very small and original to the 25-year-old building. Enlarging the bathrooms is not an option, by the way. Last year, I had planned to renovate the guest bathroom, and I bought a nice small vanity with a vessel sink. Unfortunately, my contractor flaked out, thankfully before work started, so that project didn't get done. This year, both bathrooms are going to be renovated. Recently, I found another vanity that I really like. Both vanities are contemporary in style, but they are not similar to each other. Will future buyers look at the two different bathrooms as a flaw or a problem? Sorry, I meant to post links to photos of the two vanities. Here's the one I want to buy for my bathroom: http://www.homedecorators.com/detail.php?parentid=3394800&cartId=11858878 Here's the one I bought last year for the guest bathroom. http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Heirloom_Bombe_24W_Sink_Cabinet_-_Black_Granite_Top/550/
Need help decided colors for my house? The first room we are painting is the study room: the furniture is all maroon, period. however, the shelves are white (they basically blend in with the walls). our pictures are of Paris and they have gold frames. the clock also has gold frames. any suggestions? the next room we're painting is our living room. this is really hard to decide becasue they're so many colors to work with. we have red and cream colored curtains, biege sofa, green lazyboys, green and cream pillows, maroon shelves, show cases & coffee tables, brownish/orangish indian seat and a brown rug. need help for a color there! the next room is the formal dining room and sitting area (which are connected). the sofas are brown and cream, the dining table, show case, and coffee tables are brown or maroon and then we have brown furniture here and there. we need two colors for that room. the final room is the master bedroom suite. the bed is brownish/orange and so are the other pieces of furniture (its all a set). color? the other room we also need help with is the room connected the master bedroom which is the sitting room. all of the furniture is either maroon or brown. the curtains are ghostly white.
how to begin a complete home renovation? i have a house that i would love to keep, the location is great but the house layout is not working for me. i dont know where to begin - what kind of contractor should i look for? do i hire an architect first? here is what i want to do: 1. tear down walls and recreate spaces - including moving windows where necessary 2. move an upstairs bathroom 3. create a master bedroom suite with new bathroom space 4. move laundry room upstairs 5. finish off basement 6. create an open floor plan down stairs by removing walls where possible 7. open up the foyer from front door 8. expand on existing sunroom and construct a new one 9. concrete porch repairs 10. brick driveway i estimate the house construction will take approximately 6 months to a year to complete. i plan to move out of the house and rent an apartment for the duration of the project. i want to 'go green' as much possible. the location is 15 minutes east of philadelphia. any one with experience? been through a renovation of this kind? all knowledge and tips on how to start and what to look for would be great! thanks!
How do I dispute a low ball appraisal? I just got a low refinance appraisal. 130K. I think my house is worth much more. I recently had it on the market and received a 147k offering in 1 month (in THIS market!!) and as I was looking for another house in the same price range I was selling mine for, I understood why my potential buyers were so adamant on buying my house. No other houses in the 140-150K price range had 2 bathrooms. I remember only seeing two and they were old and raggedy with much work to be done. My house is completely gutted and modernized; it has two bathrooms and a first floor master bedroom suite! Moreover, the city assessment list my hoe as being a one story with 1 bathroom and much lower square footage- and I suspect the appraiser used the city records to determine my square footage. I am really disappointed. This affects my whole purpose for refinancing. Is there anything I can do dispute this, i.e. use my own research to prove to the lender/appraiser that my house is worth more?
What type of home is better? A house with 3 bedrooms or a double-wide. We have some land picked out because developers have bought our rental. I like houses and the way they look, but I live in a double-wide now and am kinda spoiled by the huge rooms in here vs. your avg. single story home. If I buy a new double wide or modular home would I be wasting my money. The size doublewide we were looking at costs $114k and is a modular home with 4 bedrooms 2 1/2 baths (master suite) and bonus room. We have land also we would build a house, but we'd go through a homebuilder place and let them do it.
what is the real estate market like in Vancouver? what would a typical house go for in a nice neighborhood with a) great schools b) about 3,000 sq feet c) 3 bedroom inc. master suite d) fireplace(s) e) two car attached garage f) nice views Thanks
Money Problem with roommate... taking me for granted?OK. I am a nurse and my roommate is a my gf's f's bf... who is a secretary, and seems like he is taking great advantage of me coz I make lit more money than him... Even before we decided to rent this place , he told me that he doesn't make a lot of money and somehow talked me into paying 55% of the rent. saying that I will get the larger master bedroom (Double master suite, both about same size). So I agreed based on sympathy. Now, he consistently mentions that I since I make more money than him thus I should also pay a larger portion of electricity bill... and he always keeps the fan in his bathroom on and keeps the air conditioning so cold even when I was very sick. What can I do in order to start equally split the rent again, and stop him from using my higher income as an excuse to pay more of our bills? Every time we tried to talk, he would be like "good that we're talking", then he would start mentioning about my income and how difficult it is for him to pay bills (and he just got engaged and bought a new Tundra)... dunno wud to do
Want to add room to vacation house on ranch!? Would like to add a master suite (bedroom and bathroom) to current 3125 sq foot home with three bedrooms & only one bath in southeast Oklahoma on several acres. Average home in small town is only $45,000. would like 450-500 sqft. Any guesstimates on prices. House is a vacation home about 5 hrs from home in Tx, want more space to invite guest out to property and need at least two bathrooms. Plus, there are eight family members who will use the home through out the year.
how much is my house worth? I am just curious as to what my house value would be in your neck of the woods. I own a 4000 sq 3 level home on 1/2 acre. I have 3 car attached garage and a heated work room. I have 3 bedrooms/3 bathroom (one with whirlpool tube). Master suite has walk in closet and balony. I have a large finished basement with bar and entertainment center (built-in) and pool table. The basement is finished with rustic barnboards on the walls. The main floor has entry, livingroom, dining room, kitchen and laundry room and a bath. Living room has fireplace and built in book shelves. entry is done with slate tile floor. Living room and all of the upstairs is done with Hickory hardwood floors with blk walnut inlay. upstairs has the 3 bedrm and bath and a loft area with built in bookshelves that over looks kitchen and dining. I am just kinda curious what my house would be worth in your area. Thanks. don't forget to tell me where you are at. I know what my house is worth in my area. I am just curious about the housing market in other areas of the US.
What is the average cost of building a garage? My husband and I bought our home from my mother-in-law about 2 years ago. The house is a small two story built in the late 1800s with 1 bath (on the main floor) & 3 bedrooms (two of which are very small). We purchased it for about 1/3 of it's actual worth. We have a lot of renovations in mind but what I'd really like to do is add a basic attached two car garage with a master suite upstairs including a master bath. We have both family and friends that are in the roofing and siding business as well as carpentry so there will be a fair amount of "sweat equity"involved. I would love any advice as far as estimates go. We plan on staying here since this house was built by the family so I'd really like to make it exactly what we need & want. Eventually I would also like to add a little terrace to that upstairs master suite as well. Thanks for reading! There are no restrictions as to what can be done (except our budget of course).
Would anyone like to buy a 50% share of a 2 bed, 2 bath new build flat in Erdington, Birmingham for £70k? I am selling my share of a lovely 1st floor new build flat on the Highcroft development in Erdington. It has been valued at £140,000, has a large lounge, good sized kitchen, 2 double bedrooms, a main bathroom and en-suite to the master bathroom. It comes carpeted, with a washer/dryer and cooker. A private parking space is also provided. Estate agents are trying to charge me £4000 to put the flat on the market, but I have been advised by several different sources that there is a big demand for 50% share properties. Bearing this in mind I thought I might try to sell my home privately. I have loved living there for the last 18 months, but my husband and I want to buy house in order to start a family. If anyone is interested in purchasing the 50% share for £70,000 then please let me know. Alternatively, please feel free to ask any questions. I plan to upload some photographs of the property onto the web in the next couple of days. Thanks in advance all, Michelle

What is are the average total costs of home renovations? I would like to purchase an old home in one of St. Louis' historic neighborhoods to rehab and live in. I would like to find something that has a solid structure and in need of a little TLC. I would like to salvage anything I can like old wood floors, pedestal sinks, trim, doors, etc. However, I expect I will have to tear out some walls to do plumbing and electrical work. The only change in floor plan would be to convert 2 bedrooms to a master suite complete with jetted tub, shower and walk in closet. I also plan to contract all the work out to an experienced renovator. I would just like to know what a ball park figure of costs would be for such an endeavor? Thanks.
home construction software? im totally renovation a home i bought. i was wondering what the best software for this is? i am finishing the basement, taking out closets and bathrooms to make the kitchen bigger, combining 2 bedrooms to make a master suite with bath and walk-in. has anyone had experience with a good and fairly cheap software to help me with measurements and give me an idea for where i want to go with it design wise? thanks
Bungalow - extension or loft conversion??? - UK!!!? I currently have a three bed semi bungalow!! I was wondering would a loft conversion - to a large master bedroom with en-suite or an extension - enlarging the kitchen into a kitchen diner and enlarging the living room, result in a higher property value. Just thinking about where i would like to be in 5 years, and I would probably need a bit more money to move with. Any ideas would be warmly appreciated. Thanx.
Should we buy or rent? My husband and I have to move out of our flat because our land lords have sold their house and the new owners need the flat. Anyway we may be either buying a really small place that has no garden or laundry facilities at the moment. It is a sectional title property It is really small. We will not be able to have people stay over; we will have to give a lot of our stuff away. There is no oven; we will have to get one of those little hot plate things. There is only parking for one car. OR We can rent a flat behind a very popular mall which will be a five minute walk to the gym. It has a two decent sized bedrooms and the master bedroom is an en-suite room, Should we buy or rent? Renting is one thousand rand cheaper than buying.

How to get a value added home improvment loan? We bought our house last summer so we don't have much equity in it yet. Our house is valued at $105K. We have a bid from a contractor for adding on a family room in the back, attaching the main house and the guest house. Then we will make the guest house a master bedroom suite. We are also adding another bedroom in the family room (the family room addition is going to be 30 x 25 so were going to take about 12x 10 or so and build a room) This is adding 1000 sqft to our house and will make it a 4 bedroom, 3 bath verses a 2 bedroom, 2 bath. The estimated cost of this renovation is $25000. A Realtor friend of mine has put the estimated value increase at a MINIMUM of $60K but said will probably be more. I have been searching the net to see whats out there and came across something called a value added loan. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to use for this? Im in TEXAS by the way. I found some off the wall loan companies and want to use a reliable and respected company.
remodel my house, any help would be appreciated? we just bought a house that we plan on living in for at least the next 5-7 years. it has 1660 sq ft. main floor has kitchen 12x11, dinning room 12x12 living room 16x14 master 19x10 and another bedroom 12x10 and a small bathroom and long hallway. upstairs has loft area 26x14 and 2 bedrooms 13x11 and a half bath. what i was wondering is we watch that HGTV all the time. we were thinking about knocking down the wall between the 2 downstairs bedrooms and making the master larger and adding another large master bathroom so we would have a master suite. that would still leave us with 3 beds and 2.5 baths. i want to know if that will increase the value of my home going from a 4 bed 1.5 bath, another problem is we are the largest house in the area right now. there was an upstairs added, all the other houses are smaller 1 story prolly 1000 sq ft homes. other houses around are going for 70-80k we bought ours for 110k. would it be worth doing this remodel???
