Any design / color ideas for my small spare bedroom?

I have a small spare bedroom that has a twin bed (with a wood frame), an old chest and a couple other pieces that will need to be painted. I was thinking about painting most the furniture along with the wood frame a dark brown. I am still not sure about painting it all but for some reason I think it would work. I am not sure about a good color scheme that would go with the dark brown furniture. I would love it to be fun but not to girlie. I was even thinking about beach colors. There is carpet in the room that is a somewhat light gray with wood trim and one window. I really don't know any ideas or help out there I would really love to hear! Also I was wondering if I should paint the walls all the same color or how the design of the wall could go.

  1. I think that the dark brown furniture would go perfect with a light green color and white accents. You could also go with a light blue with white accents and do your beach them by adding sea shells as decor items. Since the room is rather small, you don't want to have too many dark, bulky items or a dark color on the wall. It will make it feel smaller and cramped.
  2. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours: http://sherlink.sherwin.com/swapp/color_visualizer/index.jsp I think a soft color like "sweet orange" (# 6351) would look wonderful with the brown furniture. And it would lend itself well to a tropical/beach theme. Get ocean blue bedding & curtains & it will be lovely & relaxing.
  3. If you are really set on your dark furniture in a small space make sure you counter point the other colors. Do everything else very light and white. A coastal feel. Gauzy curtains and walls so light blue they are almost white to complement the gray carpet. You can decorate with shells and natural baskets and rope materials, sea glass, black and white photos of the ocean and beach. Big fluffy hotel style white comforters. Think texture not colors.
  4. Paint the furniture white and the walls blue.
