How to get rid of roaches on bed room furniture?

So, my husband and I bought a bedroom furniture (inculding mattress) set via craigslist. When we got it to our house, we noticed several tiny roach crawling out of the drawers. Obviously the house we bought it from was infested!!! Thankfully we have not seen any come out of the mattress. We are afraid to use soup and water because this will damage the furniture. Any suggestions? Is this salvagable, or did we just buy a disaster?!?!?!

  1. Holy disaster!!! Get anything and everything that kills roaches now before the problem gets bigger.
  2. There are probably many roach nests INSIDE the mattress; that would explain the juvenile roaches you saw. No telling how bad the infestation is unless you open the mattress and destroy it. I would put it in the dumpster, IMO.
  3. Just get several boxes of Roach Motel type traps. Place them in the back of the drawers and under the furniture. Put the traps in your bath, kitchen, etc. Write the date you open them on the backs of the traps so you'll know when to replace them. They last about 3 months. An insect growth regulator would work even better, especially if the roaches get out of control. Years ago this happened to me, roaches brought in with other items. I found an aerosol named Birth Control For Roaches, which totally destroyed them. I haven't seen it since, but there is one called Gentrol. Check out the link below.
  4. chuck it. Roaches are carnivorous and even if you manage to kill some of them, the others will come eat the dead ones. Chalk it up to a lesson learned: never buy a used mattress.
  5. Oh my lord, this sounds like a disaster. Roaches are nothing to mess with. Throw out the bedroom set immediately. Seriously. There's a reason why they're older than even dinosaurs - the little suckers are really tough! http://science.howstuffworks.com/cockroach.htm They're most likely German roaches rather than American roaches, since you're describing them as "tiny." German roaches breed really fast and are extremely hardy. Here's some more info: http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/urban/roaches/german.htm Roaches "in extremely heavy infestations have been reported to bite humans and feed on food residues on the faces of sleeping humans." Extermination is often hard because "Cockroaches species, including the German cockroach, have developed insecticidal resistance to many insecticides." http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/resources/GermanRoach.shtml Throw out the bedroom set. Do not try to save a little money by keeping the bedroom set - you will probably find yourself with a big headache later on, since roaches are HARD to exterminate. I would also call an exterminator after you throw out the bedroom set, to cover your bases.
  6. Toss the furniture and call an exterminator. A bug bomb would be best.
  7. I would soooo get rid of the mattress and then you should buy a bug bomb sounds weird I know but leave all the drawers open on the dressers and let that sucker off. Please read all inst. to bomb before using though there are alot of precautions to using these items, remove all pets and people ect.
