Why does it seem like a new houses that are being built or showhomes?

have incredibly SMALL kids rooms! I mean you couldnt even put an entire bedroom set in them, maybe a bed and a night stand and a dresser if you are lucky, but they would be crowded together. I think new homes are getting too small in the bedrooms for kids, am I the only one who thinks this? I mean if you look in those books on how to make awesome kds rooms the rooms are so damn big! Like big enough that some kids rooms have a mini theater or stage or loft! And this is for kids under 7!

  1. The idea is that children will not stay cooped up in the small room and will migrate to the larger family areas for more family time. Nice idea but large rooms are still way better.
  2. I definatly agree with you.. Most of those are just standard plans that housing companys have. You have to have a custom built house nowadays to get what you want.
  3. I don't know. I haven't been in any show homes lately, but it took some doing when we were looking at floorplans to find one with rooms SMALL ENOUGH. Weird, huh? They had ridiculous dimensions like 15x20 and such. That sounds like a MASTER bedroom to me, not a kid's room. But we finally found one with 12x12 rooms. But my brother-in-law just bought a modular home and its rooms are HUGE as well. If that's what you're looking for, maybe look into the modulars? Or build your own home? I have no idea why, though. It seems that the dimensions are erring too much in either direction and not in the middle.
  4. We just purchased a new 5 bedroom home as we are about to have baby #3. Our bedrooms are good size (not including master) they are between 13 x 15 ft & 12 x 15. We lucked out with a great deal on our home because the home market is crashing. But a few friends of ours that went into starter size new builds have almost cubical size bedrooms, I would just assume buy a older home than.
  5. I dont' know - it is crazy!
  6. They do... but then consider the people who buy a house like that. All of the amenitites are geared towards the self-centered parents. Instead of asking why the kids rooms are so small -- they are probably asking if the Master Bedroom is big enough!
  7. My grandma raised 5 six foot boys in a tiny little two bedroom with a basement. Now THAT is a small house. I think if you need more room why not make the garage into a play room. Put down a cheap rug and some old couches and let them paint it themselves and all that rough kid stuff.
