What color to paint a basement bedroom?
Recently my brother moved out of his basement bedroom to serve in the Marines. I'm making his old room into a kids room for my nephews ages 20 months to 10 years old. The carpet is gray with red, green and blue speckled. The only piece of furniture is a tan love seat with brown and white stripes...from a distance the stripes look blue. There are no windows and the lighting is florescent. I don't have the exact size of the room, but a full size bed is the largest size bed that will look right in it. Currently the walls are a light olive and it just does not look right. I was thinking about a medium to dark blue. I also thought about striping light blue and darker blue, but I wasn't sure how that would look with a striped love seat. What colors do you suggest for the walls? Any shades of white are out of the question. Also, what sheen? I was thinking a satin.

- There is a color called "oyster", which is barely gray, and you may think it is too white, but I think it is a safe bet for the room you described.
- Anything really light or neutral will help make the room look bigger and brighter. You don't want to go to dark or too bright or bold cause it can cause the walls to move in on you. Look into pastels if you want blue, or beiges, if you want something brighter. But if you choose something that you like, you'll be happy with the end result!
- I would go with a slate blue..It's kinda in between blue and gray..should do well with your carpet , plus it's light so your room will look bigger and brighter. Satin on the sheen.
- Satin will be nice, because it will make up for some of the darkness that not having windows will obviously cause. You won't want to go too dark on the blue, or else you'll make it feel too much like. . .well, a basement! Also, the stripes may not go, if the couch is stipes, but keep in mind- if you love the look on the walls, go for it and you can always buy a slipcover for the couch!
- I would suggest doing stripes in a light & medium blue. Like Sherwin Williams' "soar" & "regale blue". With the room in the basement, I image that it might receive limited light, and you'll want to try to keep it as bright as possible. - In a basement room, I suggest you make the colors as light as possible. Also, since the room is going to be for more than one child, stick to a simple design to keep the room from looking cluttered. I would paint the walls a light orange on top and use chalkboard paint on the bottom of the walls. Orange will brighten the room up and give a happy feel to the room. Then coordinate the fabrics in the room to match. I would consider buying a cover for the couch to keep the couch from becoming soiled from kids playing around it. Something you could just throw in the washing machine when it becomes dirty. Then adapt a 'rainbow' design to the room to accept all the different colors of the room. - I would stay away from stripes on the wall if you plan on keeping the sofa. It would be too busy and would also make the room feel smaller. A light to medium blue-gray would be nice. It would lighten the room and compliment what you already have. A satin finish would be a good choice as long as the walls are in good shape. The shinier the finish, the more it will highlight imperfections.
