- 2 ways to go retro/funky: hippie/bohemia (late 60's and 70's) or "modern" mid-century (50's and early 60's) a loft, like a bunk bed without the bottom bunk, is a good idea for any tight space. remember your room is the size of an average dorm room that 2 people share with their microwave and desk space. you can buy loft sets at most bed stores. don't worry too much about the style or design of the bed, you can decorate around pipe frames (which will look really good in the mid-century "modern") or a wooden frame one for the hippie look. a lot of lofts come with a desk or dresser or small closet underneath, with bookshelves and storage, to make good use of little spaces, so you get 2 pieces of furniture in 1! wall decals available at www.urbanoutfitters.com are available for either of the styles. round paper lanterns also work for both styles. they also have a good selection of bedding and beaded curtains and folding moon chairs (big round padded comfy chairs for reading) for the hippie/bohemian look. for a really authentic feel decorate with panels of fabric, a mixture of sheer and gauzy curtains. for the more classic modern look, think about folding dressing screens and the molded furniture from www.hermanmiller.com (some of this stuff can be found at second hand stores for way cheaper, but the website is good for ideas) and bedding with geometric patterns like the stuff ty pennington has at sears in the home department go with creams and yellows and reds and an occasional dark plum to accent your tangerine walls. clear rope lights secured under you lofted bed will set an awesome ambiance for reading or hanging out and relaxing. your room is always going to seem bigger if you keep things organized. bookshelves painted to match your bed and desk are good for photo albums and momento boxs. you can go to target or walmart or home depot or lowes and get enough shelves and drawers and cabinets of the mix and match prefabricated stuff to cover and entire wall, for $50-$150 dollars with the loft and desk combo, and the wall of bookshelves, you should have enough room for an old armchair or moon chair or window bench (or even storage bench) for reading for the hippie/bohemian look mix and match your picture frames, wood and bright color and bright photos, for the mid century "modern" go with black and silver picture frames the key to making a small space seem larger is to keep it clean and organized. you're mom will love that you're making an effort to keep it clean and will probably be more willing to spend the $$ on decorations. good luck. i love your bold tangerine walls.
