- This is a little tricky because we don't have pictures of your house. And color preference is very personal. A few pointers I make: if the room is large and bright, it's ok to paint it with darker hues. For smaller rooms, use light colors to make it bigger. For two-tone colors, use the darker color at the bottom, lighter at the top. For your kitchen, to provide contrast with your white cabinets and light-colored tiles, a darker color will make your cabinets pop out. Again, the colors will depend on you and the ambiance you want to create for yourself (and family). Picking the best color for your mood will make your house enjoyable and a great retreat all year round. Make sure to visit your local hardware store. Free paint brochures will give you a lot of color combinations, and small trial packs for a fraction of the price allows you to try the colors first on each room.
