What do I need to paint my bedroom set?

I have a pine bedroom set. It is not painted but it does have a glossy finish on it. I want to paint it black. I don't know if I need a primer or just the paint. I certainly don't want spray paint because it will use way too much. It is completely wood with no laminate. Please help with some suggestions! I'm assuming the finish is varnish.

  1. If it already has a glossy finish on it, some sort of varnish? You must by sanding remove most of that first. Could be a lot of work. Then apply a primer and finally a good oil based paint.
  2. Use a liquid de glosser or liquid sanding solution to create a surface the paint will adhere to. Then you can go with a couple of options. For a more rustic look, get Minwax stain in Ebony and use a staining pad to pull the stain over the wood. Go in the direction of the wood grain. You will get a hint of your original color peeking through.2 coats and less original color will show through but you should still be able to see the wood grain. If you want an opaque look, get a semigloss laytex and paint away. Good luck
