I have antique wood bedroom furniture. How can I update the look?
Our bedroom furniture is antique but in great condition. I have a long dresser with a huge mirror and a tall dresser. How can I update the look? Can you paint wood? It also has a shiny finish on top.

- You can paint it...but you would have to sand it down first, apply a coat of primer and then the paint... Personally I would just sand them down and put a nice stain on ...
- If this is a true antique, then painting it would lower the value quite a lot. However, if you wish to paint it, you should remove all the hardware on drawers, then sand lightly over all surfaces to be painted, remove dust with a tact cloth. You may want to prime the surface if you are going to a lighter color, in any case the primer will make the new paint cover better and give you a better finish. Should you choose to not paint the furniture, you can up date with new spread, pillows and drapes in your room. Adding new lamps or lamp shades will also help make it more up to date.
- I have no idea what value the set might have, monetarily or sentimentally, but if you alter it, you'll lose any of that value. To paint it you might have clean it, strip it, sand it, and/or prime it first. DOC
- Don't mess with the finish on the furniture. You can change the look of the room by adding modern artwork and new comforter, shams and tailored bedskirt. You could change the hardware on the drawers to something more modern. Just take one of the pulls with you to match up so you don't have to drill new holes. Also save all the old pulls. Place in a ziplock bag in one of the drawers.
