Setting up a bedroom for a 3 year old boy?
My fiancee and her 3 year old son are moving in with me next week. She's been a single mom since he was born. His dad rarely pays any child support and when he does, it's not much. They've been living in a 1 bedroom apartment and he's never had a space all his own before. I have a larger 4 bedroom house with a big yard. My friend is coming over today and we're going to set up a swingset in the back yard for the kid and I'm going to work this week on getting his bedroom ready for him. I asked him what he wanted in his room but all he says is a bed and a dresser. He hasn't been much help in deciding how to decorate it or what kind of stuff kids his age like. I'm hoping some of you parents with boys around his age can help me out. What sort of things do your kids like? Is there anything in particular that is a must-have with a child his age in the home?

- Find out what his favourite tv program is and decorate like that. Buy some wallpaper/picture, bed stuff and curtains to match. As for stuff he needs in it you could take him shopping and let him choose his own one :) then maybe just a dresser and a toy box to keep all his things in :)
- My daughter is three. Girls and boys are a little different though, but really, they just want something to sleep on and things to play with. Ask your fiancee for help. Go on a shopping trip together maybe. Most 3yr olds have their "thing" wether it be trains, cars or nautical things for boys, or fairies, princesses or "purple" with little girls. Focus on that.
- there are so many things you can do for little boys, cars, tractors, sports, sponge bob, under water fish, spider man or just super heroes. what kind of things does he like? this will probable be his first time sleeping in his own room so he might not want to sleep in there, at least for the first few nights, until he is comfortable and ready to do it on his own, you could take him with you to pick out what he wants in there that would be a good bonding experience for the both of you and it will help get him excited about his own big boy room. Good Luck & congratulations on the new family & i hope this info helps!
- I disagree with decorating based on a Tv character - in 6 months, they could be into a whole new things. I'd agree with the poster who said to kind of wait and see what he likes before you actually decorate and include him in the process. In the meantime, a bed, dresser and perhaps a toy box or way to store things would be helpful. Use accessories to have any type of 'theme' like cars or truck bedding or the like. But again, wait until he is moved in and go about it very slowly. It is pretty intimidating to suddenly have a large space in a strange house. He will have to get used to it. At 3, they don't spend a whole lot of time by themselves in their room.
- As a mother of 2 boys I can safely say you cannot go wrong with cars, tractors, trains, diggers, aeroplanes. I'd suggest painting the walls blue, green or both (2 opposite walls green and the other 2 opposite walls blue, this is how Iam doing my sons room soon) then picking his bedding and curtains as his favourite TV charactor (that's if you don;t mind changing it in 6 months) or bedding and curtains with cars etc. A name plaque on his bedroom door would be a nice touch also as you say he's always slept in his mothers room so it will give him a sense that the room is all his and something he doesn't have to share which will make him feel real grown up which is never a bad thing with a young boy. I'm sure he wil love it no matter what you do to it. Good luck
- Paint is him blue, green, red or whatever is favorite color. Buy him some toys and put them in a toy box. It's nice that you are doing all that stuff for him! =)
- My fiancee has three year old twin boys. They come to visit us every week. I didn't have a lot of money to decorate so I took pictures of the boys and their dad and posted them all of the room. I printed the pictures on the computer then glued them on construction paper. It personalized the room for them. I also added letters of the alphabet and numbers (1-10) to help them learn while they played. It worked well and the room is cute. I did use a lot of different colors.
- Oh YAY, what a fabulous happy ending for them! You are a wonderful man! :) I have two sons, so I think I can help you out. All three year old boys will love trains, trucks, planes and cars. Maybe one of them more than the other, so ask your fiance which of these he has the most of. Even if you don't focus the whole room on a "theme", you can just get some really basic boyish curtains (like blue stripes), one of those floor rugs that has the fake roads/city stuff on it (to play cars on), and then a framed picture or two of cars/trains/trucks/sports (whatever his mom said he plays with the most). My 3 year old also really loves looking at pictures of people he loves. Put up a picture or two of him with his mom, or the three of you together, etc. It'll bring a really warm, happy, personal element to his room. He also loves having a little toddler sized table with paper, coloring supplies, and stickers always available to use. It really helps promote creativity, so he can just whip up a picture whenever he wants. He loves giving pictures he's made as gifts (also a good thing to promote). :) You'll do great! Hope this helped! :)
- what does his room at home look like make look like his old room at his house now if not try transformers cars thomas the train good luck
- When my son was 3 he LOVED Thomas the train! Like some of the other ppl said though you could just let him go shoppin with you and he will let you know if he sees something he really likes. Also, Go diego Go...Handy Manny...Bob the Builder..ect is popular with this age group. you will definitely need a night light too since he will be sleeping in his own room!!
- The most important thing would probably be to have a room that can grow with him, so blue or green paint would be good. A place for toys, like shelves or a toy box (with a lid that can't fall on it's own and has holes in case he shuts himself in it) Easy accessability is good for a little child, and room to play. You might consider setting his room up in areas (like blocks area, and drawing area...) would allow for transitioning between activities so that he doesn't become bored by playing with all his toys at once, and it would allow easily understood clean up (clean all the toys that go in the blocks bucket then go play) rather than random placement of toys.
- YOU are so sweet! This little boy is very lucky to have you in his life. Good luck on your new living arrangement! I would ask him what his favorite color is and paint the room that color. A neutral decor would be best. dont go paining Thomas the Train on the walls he will outgrow it very soon. If he likes sports, or seems interested that is a good theme. Sheets and bedding is a biggie with my kids and not that expensive to change when they grow out of whatever and is a great christmas or birthday gift when they find something new the love. So get his favorite character, dinasaur(my sons fav for 3 years) trains, cars...whatever he likes. You dont have to go crazy im sure he will just like his own space. I would say a night lite and a new stuffed toy would be nice, something to make him feel safe and keep him company in his new room. A fish tank, or one fish in a bowl...if you are willing would be great!!! You could get plastic drawers and fill it with coloring books, crayons, markers, playdoh!!! glue sticks, watercolor paints. It doesnt seem like he may have had alot so im sure what ever you do for him will be well appreciated. A blow up swimming pool or sprinklers, it is hot here!!!!
- A train set that he can build and reshape...or one of those train tables. Stuff for building or a toy tool set. Maybe a little art desk with his own art supplies.... or maybe a musical section with toy guitars, drums, maracas, keyboard, etc.
