Why do little girls have to play with Barbies ?

I had the Crystal Barbie, Corvette and a bedroom set for my Barbie. I pretended I was her, had her body and face , I was a career woman with my own place and Ken was my boyfriend. Now an adult - reality for most adult females is nothing like that. So why do little girls have to play with pretty dolls and pretend to make believe the perfect princess life ?

  1. 1. they don't "have" to. I didn't play with barbies. 2. just like religion, its just false hope.
  2. They don't have to; it's just fun for them to play pretend.
  3. Children like to play with dolls. It's been that way since ancient times. No one "has" to, but little girls like to. I think that people are taking the princess and fantasy life that Barbie represents a little too hard these days. There's nothing wrong with a child indulging in fantasy as long as there is a healthy dose of reality to accompany it. I used to play with a She-Ra doll (dating myself) who had a magical crystal castle and a rainbow-colored flying horse. I knew it wasn't reality and that it would never be reality, but it was fun. What's the alternative? Every time they try to come out with "realistic" dolls centered around careers and business and the like parents eat it up but their kids won't touch it. Childhood is a time for make-believe and a little bit of that is healthy and perfectly normal.
  4. i never did...i liked to pretend i'm one of the power rangers o.O
