How much do you spend on furniture for a teens bedroom?

My mum said we'd have like $1500 for my room, is that alot or not that much. I have to get EVERYTHING. We're moving to the US from New Zealand and just are getting one container for the ship so its just going to have hairlooms. I have to get a bed, desk, bookshelves, towels, duvet everything.

  1. That seems like a decent amount if you know how to shop. You don't seem to be the "spoiled brat" type, so having the basics (bed, lights, desk, drawers, some small decorations) would probably be enough at first. However, getting electronics can start taking a huge chunk out of your $1500. Computer, 400-600, TV 60-200, etc.
  2. I think $1500 is plenty. If you live near IKEA (or want to shop online) you can find some great stuff for a teen's room and it's pretty cheap. You can also find some really good quality furniture that will work well if you shop a little bit. Because this is a "down economy" there are a lot of furniture store sales going on. When you buy furniture you can negotiate a little bit, too. Ask for free upgrades or a package bargain. Good luck on your move and have fun picking out new furniture!
  3. Please understand most US teens have plastic/ 2nd-hand/ cheap furniture -- you'll be more than fine. First, do opt for a descent bed/ mattress. Second, everything else in the teen world isn't really made for "lasting heirloom" quality. In fact if you can hold off, Aug is the best time to buy because kids are getting ready for college and everything will be on sale. Ikea is great, but unless you're moving to a major city familiarize yourself with Walmart and Target (both have websites).
