Is a 8000 BTU window air condtioner worth buying for a medium bedroom? Whats the best you reccomend?

I live th new york area and its like 90-100 degrees out here.

1. an 8000 will work good,but a 5000 will cool 1 room and it would be cheaper.and cheaper to run.
2. 8000 is more than enough. 8000 cools our 12 x 16 room down to a chill. Just make sure it fits in the window. I made that mistake, once. As for brand -- we have bought several brands over the years, Kenmore, Sharp, GE -- they all lasted for several years. Two of them are still going strong after 10 years (we sold both of them). .
3. If you live in an extemely hot or humid area that will keep it some what cool........You didn't say where you lived. .I lived in FL which is hot and humid and had a window air.......I had to sit directly in front of it....Then when I lived in NM it is hot and dry and another window air.....that didn't do anything. I put a portable fan in front of them so they could direct some of the cool air near me....... Both places the rest of the room and house was baking!!!!!
