When did the bedroom slipper become a Universal item in the house?

Now I could be wrong on this, but when bedroom slippers first came out (probably 1800's or early 1900's) they were primarily worn with pajamas. However somewhere along the way people (especially women) started wearing them around the house in general (meaning with daytime clothes too). I'm just wondering when that started (I'm guessing mid-late 40's), but does anybody else have a better idea?

1. I have this idea that they became fashionable after the Marx Brothers slipped on a banana peel in one of their comedy routines. Hence the name slipper. Of course I could be wrong.
