teen girl bedroom decorating help???

I'm almost fifteen and over the summer I painted my room a really pretty purple, I have a big bed, black desk and white bookshelf and I have a few posters up but other than that, my room is pretty boring to me. I really want colorful things to brighten it up, but I'm practically broke. So, any tips on how to create decor items without buying anything? By the way, I also love polka dots, bright colorful things, stripes and purple is my overall favorite color. Also, if anyone knows where I could get big circle stencils so maybe I could paint dots on my wall?? Or, where I could get those adhesive big circles?

  1. get a pin board and go through some magazines, pin up images that describe you and make a nice mood board, mines got pictures of my friends and old cinema tickets its full of memories! chessey i know but its well gd
  2. Use the lids for pots and pans and from bowls and margarine tubs to trace different size circles on your wall. You can use any left over paint your folks have to paint the outline. You don't have to make it a solid like a polka-dot and you don't have to be perfect. Just kinda go around the outline and don't worry if it is a little lopsided or if the beginning and end don't touch perfectly. If you can paint the desk or the bookshelf so they match it would help. Again your parents may have some leftover paint you can use. Use the covers from CD's to make a stripe from floor to ceiling - spacing them equally. Maybe you will have enough to make a couple of stripes. Go to the local video rental place and ask them for some posters. look in teen magazines for some as well. If you can buy a can of yellow or orange or green spray paint you can paint a lamp, a trash can or basket (to use for trash) and most anything else (pictures frames, etc) to really brighten up the space...and spray paint is only a couple of dollars a can. Hope this helps. :)
  3. If you have some colorful cloths you could display them on the wall on nice hangers instead of putting them in the closet. Go on the computer and download some pictures or graphics in the colors you like. Mount them on a white or colored piece of paper and hang them up.
  4. You can make the circle stencils yourself out of posterboard. You might also think about putting dots on the bookshelf and desk....small ones on the edge that faces outward...you could do this with paint or stickers...that would add some interest.
  5. The product you are referring to is called Wallpops & they are available at Lowes & many Target stores. http://www.wall-pops.com/ You could also try brightening the room up with new bedding & pillows. You can get those bed in a bag sets almost everywhere at a very reasonable price. Try hunting yard sales or pulling items such as vases, candles, & plants from other rooms of the house(ask your parents first) & incorporating them into your bedroom. Also, you could paint the inside of the white bookshelf a purple color to match your walls or any other coordinating color of your choosing. I would also suggest painting or replacing the black desk either white or a green color to better pull the whole look together.
  6. I have painted polka dots on a wall before and its actually pretty easy. find out how big you want the polka dots. If you want them 1 ft, tie a 1/2-inch piece of string around 2 pencils. while holding one pencil on the wall in the same place, pull the other pencil so the string is taut and basically draw on the wall in a circle around the stationary string. Have you ever thought about hanging paper lanterns? they come in bright colors and they are extremely unique! I'm not exactly sure what your parents would go for but there are lots of ideas out there. I am 18 and am constantly changing my room around. Another idea would be to pick any wall in your room and buy ribbon. Have you ever seen those message/picture boards with ribbon overlapping them? How about making your wall into a big version of this. You could hang the ribbon using small nails and then over top of the nail head attach big colorful buttons. You could hang pictures of friends/family, notes, posters, anything. I could help you with other ideas. you can email me if you like
