Need Decorating Tips for Kids Bedroom?

I recently moved into a smaller home, and my kids are sharing a room. I have a 10yr old daughter and 6yr old son. I really want the room to look spacious despite the fact it isn't a large room. Also, I want it to be organized, comfy, and modern. Above all else, incorporate my kids own personal styles. My son really doesn't care too much but my daughter is now a pre-teen. I'm having a hard time finding a combination of colors that would blend well in the room together. (My daughter doesn't like pink, so that makes it easier) Any tips from paint, furniture, etc. would be greatly appreciated, thanks :-)

  1. I painted my room in light colours, i used blues, but you can use any colour really, just dont fall into the trap of creating that 'blue for boys' and 'pink for girls' look, even though your pre teen doesnt like pink i just thought id put that in. Also, my room looks much bigger as it is, mainly because of my furniture, i have a wardrobe, a bookcase a desk and bed, and well thats about it, ovcorse the best way to make it look spacious is to keep it clean, and i also think that having the curtains open helps my room look bigger, but that might just be me. My bed is just a plain metal bed frame, but with a really Jazzy quilt and pillows, that way its not over the top with a wild bed frame, but the jazzy covers add colour and makes it interesting. I hope this helps, and as i said, this is only from my experiance, and i am by no means the next Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen!

  3. You could pick your bedding first and then pull a color from that to paint the walls. There are a lot of great bed in a bag sets reasonably priced at Marshalls / TJ Max and one I saw today was super soft in feel, white background with teal blue, brown and bright green. Paint ideas for these colors: robins egg blue, butter cream, In the third link, towards the bottom is a photo with green and blue bedding, curtains, etc. and a nice creamy color on the walls, which seems unisex. I also like the peel and stick decorations which you can find similar ones for $6. Maybe give each kid their own set that to arrange on the walls as they see fit. Paint ideas for a cheery mood. Golden yellows, like Benjamin Moore's Golden Honey, or Good Vibrations, acts as a neutral, gives off a warm, happy glow and goes with everything. Buy eggshell or satin finish to keep the walls looking good longer. Bedroom design ideas for small spaces are a challenge, but bunk beds like the one in the last link may be helpful. Instead of a ladder, it has stairs up to the second bunk which is safer, and the steps have built in storage. You can get it with an additional two drawers under the bed, or a trundle bed (3 beds total). Great for sleepovers.
