What are some cheap options for long distance moves?

My family and I are moving from Atlanta, GA to Denver, CO in a few months so I am looking around for some moving options. My wife, son, and I have been living in a temporary condo here in Atlanta for just 2 years after moving from a 4 bedroom home in St. Louis, MO and now we are relocating to Denver. We left behind a quite a bit of belongings in St. Louis to make the move easier but we still have many large furniture and belongings. We rented a moving truck and loaded, drove, and unloaded ourselves with help from friends which was a lot of work but easy on the wallet. This time, our travel distance is almost twice the distance and we would have to get a hotel half way. We are up for the challenge but I've been looking around and found some "discount full service moving companies" which caught my attention but I am unsure about it. So if anyone has any advice, ideas or experience you can share with me I would appreciate it very much. Also I know there are different moving options where you can hire movers to load and unload but drive the truck yourself or load and unload yourself and have a professional driver deliver the load. ANYTHING is appreciated, Thanks! (Sorry for the long detailed description :) )

  1. Many companies offer container moving. They drop a shipping container at your house, you pack it with your stuff, they pick it up and truck it to your new address, you unpack it and they pick up the empty container. A company called PODS is one that offers this.
  2. I would look at those POD things. I think Mayflower has them now.
  3. So far everyone offered some great suggestions as PODS are definitely low cost and transportable once loaded. The other suggestion would be to go with a local storage company in the city that you are planning to move to that usually has a partnership with a local moving company. The smaller moving companies tend to offer better deals while still being protected like the big boys with stuff like insurance, bonding and such. Here is Silicon Valley the best moving company that I know of is a company called ML Movers. You should be able to fine their site in resource to this question. I do believe that they offer moving services all over the country so it doesn't hurt to give them a shout. I don't know how many offices they offer but check them out.
